Last night I was reminded why people make their homes in Healdsburg! For over 20 years the Healdsburg Pantry had been feeding the needy and seniors. It would not exist if it were not for the hard work of community members…..here is how it works.
The rent for the Pantry is $1500 per month and the utilities are $245. Through the Shared Ministries here in town they can buy food for $.09 cents per lb. Thanks to Susan Graf here in town who every year gets all the expenses ($25,000 per year) wrapped up by having a Square Dance and dinner with auction at the local event center called Villa Chanticleer. Right after dinner last night the North County Council of Realtors donated their $5000 (we raised it at a golf tournament 2 weeks ago), Pezzi King Winery jumped in with $1000, individuals volunteered to take a month of rent or utilities (I donated for the month of November utilities) and so on.
Then there was a live auction for wonderful dinners at private homes or your home with wine and food from CK Lamb, Big John’s Market and many others, prepared by gourmet chefs from all over Sonoma County. Also there was a guess the weight of the pumpkin (222lbs!) and guess the weight of the pumpkin pie (6lbs.). It only cost $1.00 to guess and the winners took home the pumpkin and the pie.
And finally, a band that volunteers every year provided fun music for a good old fashioned square dance. Fun was had by all! And the fall leaf décor and lighting was absolutely gorgeous. If you are looking for a place to live where there is always something fun and worthy going on, Healdsburg is the place for you!
