Cotati is located approximately eight miles south of Santa Rosa, nine miles north of Petaluma and 47 miles north of San Francisco near Highway 101. Named after a Miwok Native American village, Kota’ti, the peaceful-looking region with its rolling hills and colorful fields is primarily a residential community made up agriculture and local business enterprise.

Cotati's hexagonal downtown plaza is listed as a California Historical Landmark, one of only two hexagonal town layouts in the United States. The unique hexagonal plaza and street grid plan was designed during the 1890s by Newton Smyth as an alternative to the traditional grid.

Sonoma State University, located in nearby Rohnert Park, is a small campus with big ideas. SSU has a tradition of promoting intellectual and personal growth, leadership opportunities and technological proficiency and a friendly, safe and informal atmosphere on a beautiful campus setting. One of the most requested campuses in the CSU system and regularly named a “Best Value” College by Princeton Review, SSU has also been named one of the “most wired” campuses in the nation by Forbes magazine.

There is always something to see and do in Cotati! In September, the City and the Chamber of Commerce gather to celebrate Cotati at the annual Showcase Cotati, where local businesses put on a "street fair" beneath the trees of La Plaza Park to showcase their wares. Cotati is home to the Cotati Jazz Festival each June, the newly established Cotati Philharmonic, the annual Kid's Day Parade and the internationally renowned Cotati Accordion Festival in late August.

There are also many other attractions within an hour's drive of Cotati. Sonoma County is home to over 250 award-winning wineries, numerous county and state parks for endless recreational opportunities, including fly fishing, camping, swimming, picnicking, trails for horseback riding, hiking or bicycling, quiet coves, sandy beaches, inspiring views, old-growth redwood groves and sports fields. Whether you want to sightsee, shop, dine, take in a show, relax or play (or all of the above), you’ll find it in Cotati!
